Most people get their wisdom teeth in their late teens or early twenties when the rest of the adult teeth are already in place.
Why Do Wisdom Teeth Need to Be Removed?
Often there isn’t enough room for another four teeth to come through so wisdom teeth frequently need to be removed. When space is tight, these wisdom teeth are called ‘impacted’ and unless taken out will try to come up underneath other teeth, or sideways through the gums. Sometimes they will partially erupt and can become infected and decayed because they are tricky to keep clean.
Do Wisdom Teeth Always Need Removing?
We will only take out your wisdom teeth if they cannot come through without causing problems and we take every precaution to keep you comfortable during this procedure. If you need all four wisdom teeth removed or if their removal is likely to be complex, we may refer you to an oral surgeon. This will be a specialist that we trust to look after you and who routinely carries out complicated wisdom tooth removals.
